Eckhart on the New Year 2011

Now that Christmas has passed, many of you are considering what resolutions you will make for the New Year. New Year’s resolutions are blueprints for change and set the intentions for the next 12 months.

The question for this New Year is:

Are your resolutions coming from your ego or from your Being – the Stillness of the Present Moment?

The ego always has an agenda. It has needs and it uses people, ideas, and circumstances to feed those needs. That’s why New Year’s resolutions are filled with goals like making more money, getting a new car, or getting a new girlfriend. As nice as any of these may seem, these goals just make the ego stronger because underneath all these drives is fear. These activities may be purposed to relax you and eliminate fear, but even if the ego succeeds in covering up that insecurity temporarily, it usually comes back even stronger once the new “goal” has been accomplished.

Another type of New Year’s resolution is the resolve to break a bad habit. “I will quit smoking, quit drinking, or quit eating so much.” You may think that this is a much harder resolution to keep than acquiring something new, yet it is really easier from the point of view of Being or Source. All structures in the personality are unstable. That is because all forms are temporary and transient. A bad habit can easily be broken once you recognize the impermanence of all structures in the ego.

So if your ego has you feeling trapped in a bad habit, use the New Year as the point of consciousness-raising and let that unstable structure fall away by engaging the Power of the Present Moment.

If your resolutions come from and contain the fullness of Being, you have truly set a new course for the new year – a course that is aligned with your spiritual compass.

To Be continued....
